We are planning to encourage the families at Morikami to participate in Earth Hour 2009 which takes place on Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 pm. For one hour, citizens and businesses in participating cities will turn off lights and as many electrical appliances as possible in unifying with the world in an energy awareness movement. This world-wide energy saving action started in 2007 and now involves almost 400 cities across every inhabited continent. The number of participating cities is growing with the closest one being The City of Miami.
The main purpose of Earth Hour is to create awareness among citizens and businesses about energy consumption and serves as an annual reminder to make conscious energy choices in our everyday lives. Although some lights and electrical appliances need to remain on for safety, many others can be extinguished for a short period of time. By participating as a group, we recognize the collective impact of our efforts and that although we are all just “one person”, together we make a big difference.
Please refer to the website: www.earthhour.org/ for more details and a very motivational video clip. We invite you to please sign the pledge at www.earthhourus.org/apisignup/signup.php and become a part of the incredible movement to stand up and be counted as a city that recognizes the importance of energy conservation and its impact on the environment.
We have also mailed a letter to the Mayor, Vice-Mayor and City Manager of the City of Delray Beach asking them to sign the pledge and offering our assistance to collaborate on a plan to spread the word and increase participation.
Please let me know if I can answer any questions for you or help you in any way to participate in this special event.
