Thank you for getting this started! One of my Green Team Members has started an "Alternative Transportation Day" for our school on Nov 20. At the meeting at Pine Jog someone mentioned that Tri Rail will give free passes for this kind of day. Unfortunetly when the Team Member inquired about this with Tri Rail they said they don't do that anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions or know someone to contact to see if there are any promotional programs that might help fund this for our families?

Hi Beth, I haven't pursued this yet but have some contact info that might help you. Here's a cut and paste from an email I received from the school coordinator at DOT. Let me know how it goes! Best Wishes, Cindy. Good afternoon, I would like to congratulate you for championing Morikami Park Elementary on efforts to become a green school. With drastic changes in our climate and the continual increase of gas prices, there needs to be a change and we want to thank you for taking the first steps to making a difference for your students. I want to you to be aware that there is another area you can tackle to becoming a 'green' school, which is transportation alternatives. The SchoolPool program is FREE resource funded by the Florida Department of Transportation to combat congestion, pollution, and traffic hazards for Palm Beach County schools. We create carpool, bike, and walking groups for parents and students interested in those options. We work with each school to develop this program to create alternatives to the single-family vehicles. Our goal is to reduce congestion from the drop-off and pick-up area, decrease vehicle emission from idling vehicles, and finally to increase safety for students to walk and bike safely to school. I would like to discuss the SchoolPool program with you further to tell you about our benefits and how we can help Morikami Park Elementary with its goal. Please contact me at your earliest convenience. Thank you, Michelia L. Our school is so excited about having a "Green Club" we're going public! We are meeting with interested parties in forming our own PAC group to initiate a change in city policy to reflect our students' desire to no longer have retailers offer "free" plastic bags. Our students want to encourage the use of alternative, bring your own bags, containers, etc. for the transport of groceries and other items. Will keep you posted on our efforts. Our first meeting with interested parties is tomorrow.

We are in need of information regarding ordinances which have been passed in the U.S. regarding the use of "recyclable/reusable" bags or restricted use of plastic bags. If anyone in our readership has information regarding sites to peruse, our students would be most appreciative.
